8.5.White matter OF THE HEMISPHERES

The white matter of the cerebral hemispheres occupies the space between the cortex and the basal nuclei. It consists of numerous nerve fibers running in various directions. Three Main systems of fibers are distinguished within the hemispheres: association fibers (connecting different Regions of the same hemisphere), commissural fibers (connecting symmetrical areas of the left and right hemispheres), and projection fibers (connecting the Cerebral Cortex with other PARTS OF THE Brain and the Spinal Cord).

The latter are known as Projection Pathways.
