4. TRAUMATIC MUSCLE INJURIES
Muscle injuries can be classified as closed or open. Open muscle injuries involve a breach of Skin integrity and are evident upon initial inspection of the wound.
Closed muscle injuries result from direct blunt trauma or occur as a consequence of sudden, forceful Muscle contraction. For instance, a rupture of the quadriceps femoris may result from a sudden contraction of the muscle while it is in a stretched state—such as when a person attempts to maintain balance while falling backward and sharply extends the knee joint. Muscle rupture may occur within the muscle belly or, more commonly, at the musculotendinous junction. This is often facilitated by degenerative changes that develop in the Muscle tissue of individuals over the age of 30.
