Slide 82. Red bone marrow (smear).
Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.
Magnification: x400.
Examine the slide under high magnification. The stroma of the red Bone Marrow is formed by reticular tissue, whose Cells are stellate in shape with oval, lightly stained nuclei (2). Between the processes of the reticular cells, groups (islands) of cells representing various hematopoietic lineages can be observed. Megakaryocytes are large ("giant") cells with fragmented, bizarre-shaped nuclei (1).
Erythroblasts, proerythroblasts, basophilic, polychromatophilic, and oxyphilic erythroblasts cluster around the "nurse" Cell—a macrophage (3). Myeloblasts and myelocytes are distinguished by the presence of granulation in the Cytoplasm (4). The nuclei of myelocytes can be round or band-shaped. Monocytes—cells with Kidney-shaped nuclei (5)—and small groups of bone marrow lymphocytes (6) are also visible. They are located primarily around Blood Vessels. 7 - adipocytes.
