The delicate stroma of the Cytology/practical/86.html">Red Bone Marrow is formed by reticular Connective Tissue, represented in the section by stellate reticular Cells (1) with pale-staining Cytoplasm.
Cross-, oblique-, and longitudinal sections of sinusoidal Blood capillaries (2) are frequently observed. Their lumens contain numerous erythrocytes and occasional leukocytes.
The compartments formed by the reticular connective tissue are filled with cells at various stages of hematopoiesis, which are best studied in bone marrow smears for easier identification. In the section, however, giant cells—megakaryocytes (3)—are most clearly distinguished.
Attention should be paid to the adipocytes (4) scattered throughout the slide, which present a signet-ring appearance, and the pink-colored bone trabeculae (5).
