Slide 53. Non-striated (smooth) muscle tissue of the urinary bladder.

Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.

Magnification: x400.

The slide shows a section of the Urinary Bladder wall. Within the wall, specifically in the muscular coat (1), bundles of smooth myocytes are visible in longitudinal and transverse cross-sections. In longitudinal section, the smooth myocytes (2) are spindle-shaped. A rod-shaped Nucleus (3) is located centrally. The Cytoplasm is oxyphilic. Collagen and elastic fibers (endomysium) surround each myocyte, blending in color with the myocyte cytoplasm.

In transverse section, the myocytes (4) and their nuclei appear round. Interstitial layers of loose Connective Tissue (5) are visible between the myocyte bundles, containing Cells typical of this tissue, Blood Vessels, and nerves.
