WORKSHOP IN HISTOLOGY, CYTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY - 2016

Chapter 4. TISSUES

Slide 48. Fibrocartilage (intervertebral disc).

Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.

Magnification: x400.

Fibrocartilage represents a transition between dense regular Connective Tissue (tendon) and hyaline Cartilage. Under low magnification, areas of both hyaline and fibrocartilage can be observed. In the hyaline cartilage (1), no fibers are visible; isogenous groups (2) are surrounded by purple Extracellular matrix. In the fibrocartilage area (3), thick bundles of pink Collagen fibers (4) are distinguishable, with chains and columns of chondrocytes (5) situated between them. Closer to the cartilage, chondrocytes are surrounded by chondrin fibers or a capsule. In more distant areas, this capsule disappears and chondrocytes are replaced by fibroblasts (6).
