Under low magnification, the periosteum (1) is observed at the periphery, stained yellow or green. Beneath the periosteum, running parallel to the bone surface, are the outer circumferential bone lamellae (2). Deeper lie systems of concentric bone lamellae with a central opening — the osteons (3). The opening represents a cross-section of the central (Haversian) canal (4) of the osteon, which contains a nutritive Blood vessel. Interstitial bone lamellae (5) are visible between the osteons. Bone lacunae are located between the bone lamellae, housing osteocytes (6) within them. Osteocyte processes extend into the canaliculi (7). The canaliculi penetrate the bone lamellae and interconnect the lacunae. Facing the marrow cavity of the tubular bone are several parallel rows of inner circumferential bone lamellae (8).
The inner surface of the tubular bone is lined by the endosteum — a delicate Fibrous Connective Tissue containing osteoblasts and osteoclasts.
