Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.

Magnification: x400.

At low magnification, at the periphery of the section, we can observe the perichondrium, which is composed of Connective Tissue and stained pink. The perichondrium has an outer fibrous layer (1) containing Blood Vessels, and an inner cellular (2) chondrogenic layer with chondroblasts. Underneath the perichondrium, young spindle-shaped chondrocytes (3) are located. Deeper lie rounded chondrocytes in clusters of 2–4 Cells, forming isogenous groups (4) or chondrons. The Extracellular matrix (5) around the isogenous groups is intensely purple (strongly basophilic), while in other areas it shows weak basophilia (pale blue or pale purple).
