Slide 43. Elastic ligament of a bull in longitudinal section.

Staining: hematoxylin and picrofuchsin.

Magnification: x80.

The ligament consists of elastic fibers (1) stained yellow and arranged in an orderly fashion as parallel bands. This is dense regular Connective Tissue. Between the bundles of elastic fibers, chains of fibroblast nuclei (2) can be seen. These smallest bundles are called first-order bundles. They combine into larger groups, second-order bundles, separated by layers of loose irregular connective tissue (3). The nuclei of its Cells stain well with hematoxylin, giving these areas a violet tint.
