Slide 29. Pseudostratified columnar epithelium (simple multiseriate ciliated epithelium) of the swan mussel intestine.

Staining: iron hematoxylin.

Magnification: x400.

Under low magnification, locate the dark band lining the inside of the intestine, which represents the pseudostratified columnar epithelium.

Under high magnification, examine the cellular COMPOSITION OF THE epithelium. The epithelium rests on Connective Tissue (1) and is separated from it by a basement membrane (2). All epithelial Cells are in contact with the basement membrane. Among them, we can distinguish the principal epitheliocytes

(3) . Their large, round nuclei are located closer to the basement membrane. Further away from it, arranged in a second row, are the nuclei of intercalated epitheliocytes

(4) . The most superficial row of nuclei belongs to the adluminal epitheliocytes (5), on the apical surface of which fine, short lines—cilia (6)—can occasionally be seen. The nuclei of these cells are oval and oriented with their long axis parallel to the cells. Goblet cells (7) are interspersed among them. They appear as light, almost transparent vesicles or are filled with a yellowish secretion. Their concave-shaped nuclei are located near the basement membrane.
