This is a cord formed by mucous Connective Tissue, through which the umbilical vessels pass - two Arteries (1) and one vein (2). The vessels provide Blood Circulation between the fetus and the Placenta. The mucous connective tissue, or Wharton's jelly (3), contains a large amount of hyaluronic acid, which ensures the elasticity of the umbilical cord and prevents the compression of the umbilical vessels. In addition to the vessels, an irregularly shaped opening can be seen in the section, representing the remnant of the allantois, and sometimes the remnant of the vitelline duct. The surface of the umbilical cord is covered by a simple cuboidal amniotic epithelium (4).
