The wall of the Esophagus is studied on a Cytology/practical/72.html">Cross section of the entire organ of a small animal. First of all, one should distinguish the Tunics of the esophageal wall: the internal mucosa (1), the middle muscular layer (2), and the external adventitia (3). The submucosa (4) is located between the mucosa and the muscular layer.

The mucous membrane consists of three layers: stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium (5); the lamina propria (loose Connective Tissue) (6); and the muscularis mucosae (smooth myocytes) (7). It forms deep longitudinal folds.

The submucosa (submucosal layer) (4) is represented by loose connective tissue containing Blood and nerve plexuses, as well as the secretory units of esophageal glands (8). The ducts of the glands open onto the epithelial surface (9).

The muscular layer (2) consists of two layers: an outer longitudinal and an inner circular. In the upper PARTS OF THE esophagus, it is composed of striated visceral Muscle tissue.

The adventitia (3) is a loose connective tissue containing large Blood Vessels and nerve trunks.
