The transition zone from the Esophagus to The Stomach is primarily characterized by an abrupt change from the stratified squamous epithelium of the esophagus (1) to the simple columnar epithelium of the stomach (2). In addition, the relief of the mucosa changes: only folds can be seen in the esophagus, whereas in the stomach, alongside folds, gastric areas with pits (3) are observed, at the bottom of which the ducts of gastric glands open (4). The latter in the cardiac region of the stomach have a Structure similar to the cardiac Glands of the esophagus. These are simple branched tubular glands.

The two-layered muscularis mucosae of the esophagus becomes three-layered in the stomach. The two-layered muscular coat of the esophagus continues into the middle and outer layers of the stomach's muscular coat and is supplemented by an inner oblique layer.
