GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS AND FEATURES

Class Florideophyceae - Florideophyceae

It unites Algae with a heterotrichous thallus Structure, often forming pseudoparenchymatous structures. Characteristic features include the presence of a carpogonium with a trichogyne; carpospores are formed in various ways; monospores and tetraspores are known, and a clearly expressed isomorphic Morphology/12.html">ALTERNATION OF GENERATIONS is observed; METABOLISM/14.html">Chloroplasts are numerous, disk-shaped, without pyrenoids; Primary and secondary pits between Cells are present. The assimilation product is floridean starch (Glycogen is not formed).

Based on the type of primary pit plugs, the presence and features of auxiliary cells, the presence of carpogonial branches, the type of generation alternation, tetraspore morphology, and ecological features, 6–8 orders are distinguished (Nemaliales, ɋɨrallinales, Ⱥhnfeltiales, Gigartinales, Rhodymeniales, ɋɟramiales), of which only two will be considered below.
