Order Typhales

Perennial rhizomatous herbs. Leaves alternate, distichous, sheathing at the base, with linear blades. Flowers small, unisexual, gathered into dense spikes, spadices, or globose heads. Fruits drupaceous, becoming nut-like upon drying, with a spongy mesocarp and a hard endocarp. The order comprises two families: Typhaceae and Sparganiaceae.
