Order Cyperales

Perennial, rarely annual herbs, with stems mostly triquetrous. Leaves alternate, often three-ranked, linear, sheathed, with closed sheaths. Flowers small, often lacking a perianth, arranged in compound inflorescences, the basic unit being a simple spike. Flowers mostly unisexual, rarely bisexual; stamens three; gynoecium of three fused carpels. Fruit is a nutlet, rarely drupe-like.

The order includes only one family - Cyperaceae.
