Order Juncales

Perennial, less commonly annual plants. Leaves are alternate, simple, linear or cylindrical, with an open or closed sheath, sometimes reduced to sheaths alone. Perianth is inconspicuous, scarious, trimerous. Stamens three, gynoecium of three fused carpels, Ovary superior. Fruit is a capsule containing three seeds. The order includes two families and over 400 species. Only one family, the rushes (Juncaceae), is represented in Ukraine.
