Subclass Asteridae
Predominantly herbs, less commonly subshrubs, and very rarely shrubs or trees. Representatives of this subclass are characterized by the presence of the reserve carbohydrate inulin. Laticifers are present in the Water/115.html">Vegetative Organs of most species. Flowers are gathered in various inflorescences, rarely solitary, predominantly bisexual (pistillate-stamens), actinomorphic or zygomorphic. The corolla is sympetalous. There are five stamens, usually attached to the corolla tube. The gynoecium generally consists of two carpels. The Ovary is, with few exceptions, inferior.
The subclass comprises five orders and 12 families, encompassing approximately 1,420 genera and about 27,880 species.
