Perennial insectivorous bog herbs, less commonly free-floating in Water, and rarely subshrubs. Phyllotaxis is alternate, occasionally whorled. Leaves are simple, entire, usually gathered into a rosette, predominantly with stipules typically covered by various glandular hairs, bristly outgrowths, and sensitive setae. Flowers are aggregated in simple cymose inflorescences, rarely solitary. Flowers are bisexual, actinomorphic, penta- or tetramerous, with a double perianth. Sepals and petals number five (four to eight). Sepals are more or less connate at the base, imbricate. Petals are free, twisted in bud. Stamens number 10–20 or four to five, most frequently five, free or rarely connate at the base. The gynoecium is usually syncarpous (paracarpous), formed by three carpels, or lysicarpous consisting of five carpels. The Ovary is superior, with numerous or occasionally few ovules. Fruits are capsules. The order is monotypic.
