Order Capparales
Herbaceous plants, less frequently trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate or occasionally opposite, simple or compound, typically without stipules. Flowers mostly gathered in terminal racemes, sometimes in panicles or mixed panicles. Flowers bisexual or occasionally unisexual, actinomorphic or zygomorphic, predominantly with a double perianth, sometimes apetalous, with nectaries. Perianth four-parted, less commonly five-parted, perianth segments free. Stamens two to four, or numerous, mostly originating from a limited number (most often four) of primordia. Gynoecium syncarpous (paracarpous), formed by two, rarely three to six (12) carpels, with fused stylodia. Ovary superior, with several or many ovules, sometimes with only a single one. Fruits are capsules, siliques, and silicles, or berries, occasionally nuts or drupes.
This order includes 4 families, 430 genera, and about 4,130 species. The flora of Ukraine is represented by all four families belonging to this order, comprising 68 genera and 237 species.
