Order Nymphaeales

Perennial rhizomatous aquatic or marsh herbs with alternate, entire leaves, with median-axillary stipules or, more commonly, without stipules. Flowers large or small, solitary, bisexual, predominantly spiral-cyclic. Perianth double. Stamens numerous. Gynoecium apocarpous or more frequently syncarpous, consisting of 2-35 carpels, with a sessile radiate or conical common stigma, or free carpels gradually tapering into a stylodium topped with a capitate stigma. Fruits are follicle-like or transitional between follicles and polycarpels. The seed coat in all species possesses an operculum.

The order includes three families, of which only one is represented in Ukraine.
