Mechanical Tissues

Collenchyma

A primary, subepidermal mechanical tissue primarily found in the cortex of young stems and petioles of dicotyledonous plants. The Cells are living, containing METABOLISM/14.html">Chloroplasts, prosenchymatous or parenchymatous, with unevenly thickened pectin-Cellulose Cell walls, which increases the strength and elasticity of growing young stems. Based on the pattern of Cell wall thickening, collenchyma is classified into angular (begonia leaf petiole), lamellar (oak and elder stems), and lacunar (burdock leaf petiole).
