4.3 Light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis

Photosynthesis consists of two phases: the light-dependent and light-independent phases. In the METABOLISM/16.html">Light-dependent phase, pigment molecules absorb photons and transfer the absorbed energy to chlorophyll a molecules; light energy is transformed into the chemical energy of ATP and reduced NADPH, and oxygen is released As a result of the photolysis of Water. All of these processes take place on the chloroplast membranes. During the light-independent phase of photosynthesis, the absorbed CO2 is reduced in the stroma of the Chloroplasts to form CARBOHYDRATES and other Organic compounds.
