20.9.3. Peritoneal dialysis

This Procedure is usually performed in a hospital. A plastic catheter is inserted into the Abdominal cavity through a small incision in the abdomen, where it can remain permanently. The Peritoneum, the serous membrane lining the abdominal cavity, acts as a semipermeable membrane and serves as a dialysis filter. The dialysate is introduced into the body through the catheter, left there for several hours, and then drained. Metabolic exchange takes place between the introduced solution and the interstitial fluid of the abdominal Organs. The dialysate can be replaced 3–4 times a day, and in between these Procedures, the patient is able to lead a relatively normal life. This method is called continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Many patients prefer it over being hooked up to an artificial Kidney machine, as it is both simpler and cheaper. However, it carries an increased risk of infection entering the abdominal cavity, which can lead to Peritonitis.
