13.1.2. Terminology

In 1988, the Institute of Biology recommended using the term Water potential to describe the Movement of water across membranes. The water potential of plant Cells is determined by two main factors: the solute concentration and the pressure generated when a Cell swells As a result of water uptake. Accordingly, reference is made to the concentration, or osmotic, and hydrostatic potentials. These terms are explained below.
