6.5. Muscle Tissue
Muscle tissue accounts for up to 40% of a mammal's body mass. It consists of highly specialized contractile Cells or fibers bound together by Connective Tissue. There are Three types of muscle in the body: striated (voluntary or skeletal), smooth (involuntary), and cardiac muscle. More detailed information on striated muscle can be found in Ch. 18, and on cardiac muscle in Ch. 14.
