Introduction

NUCLEOTIDES are involved in a multitude of biochemical processes. Perhaps the best-known role of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides is as monomer precursors in The Biosynthesis of RNA and DNA. In addition, purine ribonucleotides act as universal Energy Sources (e.g., ATP) and regulatory signals (cAMP, cGMP), are components of Coenzymes (FAD, NAD, NADP), and serve as methyl group carriers (S-adenosylmethionine); pyrimidine nucleotides function as high-energy intermediates in Carbohydrate METABOLISM (UDP-glucose, UDP-galactose) and lipid synthesis (CDP-acylglycerol).
