Vitamins and Trace Elements: Their Role in Enzyme Function
Some enzymes require manganese ions
The enzyme arginase, which hydrolyzes Arginine to form urea—the end product of Amino Group METABOLISM in The Human Body—contains tightly bound Mn2+ ions required for its enzymatic activity. The Mn2+ ion also serves as a cofactor for certain phosphate-transferring Enzymes, as well as enzymes that facilitate oxygen evolution in plant Chloroplasts during Photosynthesis.
