The reactor consists of two Pyrex Glass cylinders (25.4 mm in length, 25.4 mm in diameter) with flat ends (facets) ground to ensure a vacuum-tight seal. Capillary channels with a diameter of 0.508 mm are ultrasonically drilled along the axis of the cylinders. Subsequent machining of one end of each cylinder at the capillary inlet creates a conical recess, such that when the two cylinders are joined with their conical depressions facing each other, a low-volume chamber is formed (Fig. 17.2). A flat, 12 mm diameter glass-fiber disk filter (GF/C grade, Whatman) is placed into the conical recess of the upper glass block. A thin porous Teflon filter is placed underneath the glass-fiber filter; this serves a dual purpose: first, it provides a vacuum seal around the periphery of the reaction chamber, and second, it acts as a mechanical support for the glass-fiber (GF/C) filter. An enlarged view of the assembled reactor is shown in Fig. 17.3.
