2.8. Hormone Receptors
Hormones act selectively on Organs and Tissues; the tissues most sensitive to hormone action are referred to as hormone targets (target Cell, target organ). The selectivity of hormone action is explained by the presence of specific receptors on The Cell surface, which are integral Components of the Plasma Membranes.
Receptors are Glycoproteins, and their Specificity is determined by the carbohydrate component of the protein as well as the carbohydrate components of the gangliosides in The Lipid Bilayer of the membrane. For certain hormones, specific binding sites within the Cell Nucleus have also been identified.
