Myokinase Mechanism of ATP Resynthesis
The myokinase (or adenylate kinase) reaction takes place in Muscles when There is a significant increase in ADP concentration within the sarcoplasm. It involves The transfer of a high-energy phosphate group from one ADP molecule to another, yielding ATP:

This situation typically arises during severe Muscle fatigue, when The rate of processes involved in ATP resynthesis fails to keep pace with the rate of ATP Hydrolysis. From this perspective, the myokinase reaction can be viewed as an emergency backup mechanism that ensures ATP resynthesis under conditions where other pathways are no longer available.
When the myokinase reaction is significantly enhanced, a portion of the resulting AMP can undergo irreversible deamination to form inosinic acid, which is not utilized in METABOLISM/26.html">Energy Metabolism. This is disadvantageous for the Organism, as it depletes total energy reserves. However, the accumulation of AMP in the sarcoplasm resulting from the myokinase reaction exerts a positive regulatory effect on glycolytic Enzymes (specifically Phosphofructokinase) and accelerates anaerobic ATP resynthesis. Like the creatine kinase reaction, the myokinase reaction is readily reversible and helps maintain a constant ATP level in muscles as the rates of ATP production and consumption fluctuate. Any cellular excess of ATP is rapidly cleared via the reverse myokinase reaction.
