The tremendous progress in molecular biology is largely due to the rapid development of Biochemical Methods. Among these, the techniques developed to study the properties and Structure of Proteins occupy a particularly important place, and it is no exaggeration to say that they form the methodological foundation of modern biochemistry.

The authors of this book, the well-known Hungarian biochemists T. Dévényi and J. Gergely, along with their colleagues, set themselves a very specific task—to discuss the most frequently used and well-proven METHODS FOR STUDYING proteins, Peptides, and Amino Acids, and to provide a practical Description of the techniques used in biochemical and immunochemical analysis. The authors did not attempt to cover all currently developed methods; they selected only the most important and widely used ones.

It should be noted that one of the key strengths of this book is the extensive incorporation of the authors' own rich experience. Almost all the described methods have been tested in their laboratories. The presentation is highly structured: a rigorous description of each method is followed by more or less detailed comments highlighting its Advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the book is highly valuable for its detailed coverage of immunochemical techniques, which are increasingly used in protein research. There is no doubt that this manual will be of great help in both research and practical work to biologists and medical professionals across various specialties.

AUTHORS' Preface

The last two decades have witnessed a very rapid development in Protein Chemistry. The methodological capabilities of researchers have expanded significantly due to the improvement of Analytical Methods and, most importantly, the Introduction of fundamentally new techniques, such as Chromatography, Electrophoresis, end-group determination, and immunochemical analysis.

These methods are used not only in theoretical protein chemistry and biochemistry; today, work in research and clinical laboratories is inconceivable without them.

In this book, we present the principles and provide detailed descriptions of the most important methods that can be used in laboratories equipped with commonly available instruments and Reagents. We would like to promote the widespread adoption of these methods, which is why we have paid special attention to practical aspects.

Along with the methods of chemical analysis of amino acids, peptides, and proteins, the book details the Methods of Immunochemical Analysis. However, it does not cover all topics: many methodological aspects are omitted due to the limited volume of the publication or our lack of personal experience. Nevertheless, we sincerely hope that, despite its inevitable shortcomings, this book will prove useful to researchers working in both chemistry and medicine.
