Needlefish and flying fish are peculiar, predominantly marine fish capable of leaping far out of the Water, with some able to glide through the air. Among them are two-winged species, featuring very large pectoral fins, and four-winged flying fish. Using their fins, these fish leap out of the water and cover a gliding distance of about 150 — 200 m. They are distributed primarily in tropical seas, and some have been found near Vladivostok. A large group consists of fish with long, slender bodies, such as the garfish (Belone belone), an inhabitant of the Black Sea that swims swiftly but is incapable of rising into the air.
