Mullets (Mugiliformes) are a small group of Fishes with a closed swim bladder and no distinct lateral line, inhabiting primarily southern seas. In Russia, the family Mugilidae is widespread in the Black and Azov seas. The flathead mullet, or striped mullet (Mugil cephalus), is of primary commercial importance. Mullets are schooling, migratory fish. Large shoals of them enter lagoons, brackish lakes, and river mouths in search of food, where they are harvested. The golden grey mullet species (Liza aurata) was successfully acclimatized in the Caspian Sea between 1930 and 1934.
