PHYLUM AMOEBOZOA
CLASS FILOSEA
Amoeboid uninucleate and multinucleate organisms characterized by thin, tapered, dichotomously branched pseudopodia known as filopodia. They reproduce asexually. While some species are naked, the majority are testate (shelled). The shape and COMPOSITION OF THE tests vary widely. Tests may be organic, often incorporating foreign particles, or composed of overlapping round or oval siliceous plates. The test features one or two apertures for The Emergence of pseudopodia.
Most species inhabit freshwater bodies, soils, and mosses; for instance, Euglypha is common in peat bogs and possesses an oval test covered with transparent siliceous scales (Fig. 21). Recently, scientists discovered a group (around 90 species) of testate filose amoebas in the interstitial spaces (the microhabitat between substrate particles) of marine and ocean bottoms.
