DIVISION TRIPLOBLASTIC (TRIPLOBLASTICA) OR BILATERAL (BILATERIA) ANIMALS

SUBDIVISION LOPHOPHORATA (TENTACULATA)

A group of mostly sessile aquatic animals whose lifestyle has largely determined their Morphology. The Mouth is surrounded by ciliated tentacles containing extensions of the coelomic canals. The tentacles are arranged either on a so-called lophophore (a horseshoe-shaped outgrowth) or in a ring around the mouth. The body cavity is a coelom. The anus is located near the mouth, outside the tentacle ring. The gut forms a loop.

This subdivision comprises three phyla: Phoronida, Bryozoa, and Brachiopoda.
