The relative simplicity of their Organization makes sarcodines a convenient subject for the introductory laboratory practical. Within the Class, three subclasses are distinguished: Rhizopoda, Radiolaria, and Heliozoa.

The vast majority of sarcodines are marine inhabitants, though a significant number of freshwater, soil-dwelling, and a small number of parasitic species also exist.

Rhizopods are characterized by a diverse Morphology, motile pseudopodia (false feet), and the absence of cytoplasmic differentiation into permanent zones. The subclass Rhizopoda comprises three orders: Amoebina, Testacea, and Foraminifera. Only rhizopods will be examined in the present practical.
