CHAPTER 5. AMNIOTES (HIGHER VERTEBRATES)

Higher vertebrates are generally considered to be birds and mammals. These two classes occupy the highest Branches of the evolutionary tree and are regarded as the most highly organized. They are characterized by complex Higher Nervous Activity. They exhibit such instincts as territorial behavior (during the breeding season, males occupy a specific area from which they drive away other individuals of the same species). Various Forms of courtship behavior are typical for them (mating fights, games, dances, flights, singing, etc.). These animals also show significant parental care, which manifests in building various types of nests, feeding and raising the young, etc.
