APPLICATION OF VACCINES IN ANTICANCER THERAPY
The idea of using non-specific stimulation of The Immune System to induce tumor rejection was first implemented nearly a century ago by Coley, who used bacterial culture filtrates to achieve the desired effect, apparently through the release of cytokines such as TNF and IF induced by their application. However, attempts to obtain similar results using purified cytokines or standard immunostimulators (e.g., BCG) proved successful only in certain types of tumors. Therefore, current research in this field is primarily focused on the induction of antigen-specific antitumor Immunity, similar to antimicrobial immunity. The hope of achieving positive results relies on solid evidence of spontaneous tumor rejection, which in some cases occurs as if the tumors were allografts; this topic is covered in more detail in Ch. 20.
