6. GROWTH OF MICROORGANISMS
6.4. PHYSIOLOGY OF GROWTH
6.4.3 Growth of bacteria in a bacterial population
A population is a collection of Bacteria of the same species (a pure culture) or different species (mixed cultures, associations) developing within a confined space (nutrient medium, etc.).
Bacterial growth, Cell reproduction, and cell death occur continuously within a bacterial population. To monitor The Development of a bacterial population, the following parameters are determined:
bacterial concentration — the number of Cells per 1 ml of cell suspension (culture liquid);
bacterial mass (cell mass, biomass, density of bacterial mass) — the number of milligrams of dry biomass per 1 ml of cell suspension (culture liquid).
During the growth of a batch (static) bacterial culture (i.e., a culture grown in any medium without replenishment or removal), correlation between these two parameters is impossible. These parameters must be distinguished.
