Transgenic Fish
Transgenic species of carp, catfish, trout, and salmon have been successfully produced. Transgenes are introduced via DNA microinjection. Following microinjection, 35 - 80% of embryos survive, of which 10 - 70% prove to be transgenic. Transgenic lines are established through the crossbreeding of Transgenic Fish.
Initial research in this field focused on investigating The impact of the somatotropin transgene on fish growth rates. Researchers at AquaBounty Technologies developed transgenic Atlantic salmon containing the Growth Hormone Gene from the Chinook salmon. The resulting transgenic Atlantic salmon were larger in size and grew faster than the control untransformed specimens. Within a year, the transgenic fish reached up to 11 times the size of their non-transgenic counterparts.
