Maceration (from Latin maceratio – steeping) refers to the softening and soaking of Tissues. In a fetus that has died intrauterine, maceration occurs under METABOLISM/18.html">The Influence of Amniotic Fluid. The fetus develops progressive edema, along with moderate enlargement of The Liver and Spleen. Microscopically, immature forms of the erythroid series can be detected in the lung capillaries, as the Lungs are less prone to autolysis and maceration.
