Preface

This textbook outlines the fundamentals of Histology, Cytology, and Embryology for medical students. Presented as a systematic, illustrated course of lectures, it provides a solid foundation for mastering key histological facts and concepts. The textbook is aligned with the current histology curriculum. For ease of use, the authors have kept the presentation as concise as possible without compromising key points or the integrity of the subject. To facilitate learning and self-assessment, each chapter concludes with a list of essential terms that students must memorize and be able to apply.

The book is illustrated with drawings of original specimens prepared by Professor V. Shymonovych, who chaired the Department of Histology and Embryology at the Faculty of Medicine of Lviv University for over 40 years. A significant portion of the electron micrographs used was kindly provided by researchers from the Central Research Laboratory of the Lviv Medical Institute—PhDs V.I. Kovalyshyn, P.D. Hordiy, and engineer Ye.F. Chahovets—to whom the authors express their sincere gratitude.

The authors are deeply grateful to Professors I.R. Barylyak, E.F. Barynov, and the staff of the Department of Histology at the Donetsk Medical Institute for their valuable feedback during the peer review of the manuscript. The authors thank Professor Ye.S. The authors hope that this first attempt at publishing an original histology textbook in Ukrainian will stimulate Structure/133.html">Discussion among Ukrainian morphologists regarding specific histological terms. We believe that the Ukrainian histological nomenclature, first adopted at the 1st Republican Congress of Anatomists, Histologists, and Embryologists (Vinnytsia, 1980) based on the Tokyo list of Latin terms, will continue to be refined through the ongoing collaboration of Ukrainian histologists. The authors will be sincerely grateful for any comments and suggestions regarding the content and design of this book and will take them into account in future editions.

Preface TO THE Third Edition

The third edition of the textbook has been revised and updated to reflect recent advances in histology and the experience of teaching the subject in Ukraine's higher medical education institutions. It incorporates suggestions and constructive feedback from reviews, discussions at seminar-meetings of histology department chairs, and personal consultations with colleagues.

Virtually every chapter has been refined, with updated illustrations and A large number of new diagrams and schemes showing the microscopic and submicroscopic structure of Cells, Tissues, and Organs. This edition features some Changes in the co-authorship. Following the passing of Professor K.S. Kabak, the revision of sections 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 4.1, 4.2, 4.5, 4.9, 4.10, and 4.11 was undertaken by Professor Yu.B. Chaikovsky. He also proofread the final manuscript and restructured The sequence of the material to align it with international standards.
