Movements of the upper limb
Movements of the forearm at the elbow joint
When the arm is fixed at the shoulder, the elbow joint allows for the following movements:
1) flexion and extension of the forearm;
2) pronation and supination of the forearm.
These movements are powered by four functional Muscle groups.
Forearm flexion is performed by Muscles that cross the frontal (transverse) axis of the elbow joint and lie anterior to it:
1) biceps brachii;
2) brachialis;
3) brachioradialis;
4) pronator teres;
5) muscles originating from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and extending down to the forearm and hand.
Forearm extension is performed by muscles that cross the frontal axis of the elbow joint and lie posterior to it:
1) triceps brachii;
2) anconeus.
Forearm pronation occurs around the vertical axis and is driven by the following muscles:
1) pronator teres;
2) pronator quadratus;
3) brachioradialis.
Forearm supination is performed by the following muscles:
1) biceps brachii;
2) supinator;
3) brachioradialis.
