Dacryocystitis

Dacryocystitis of the newborn is an inflammation of the lacrimal sac. The cause of this condition is the incomplete opening of the nasolacrimal duct by birth. Clinically, it manifests as epiphora (tear pooling) and mucopurulent discharge at the inner corner of the eye. When pressure is applied to the lacrimal sac area, purulent discharge is released from the puncta lacrimalia.

Treatment involves massaging the lacrimal sac area in a downward direction to rupture the membrane and restore the patency of the nasolacrimal duct. If patency is not restored within one week, probing and irrigation of the lacrimal passages must be performed.
