Urinary Organs - Ureter - Topography of the Ureter

The Ureter is located in the retroperitoneal space, lying on the parietal Peritoneum, and subsequently extends to the lateral wall of the lesser pelvis. As it reaches the lateral pelvic wall, the ureter crosses the common iliac vessels, and more inferiorly, the obturator nerve and the Anterior branches of the internal iliac vessels. In women, the ureter lies lateral to the Uterus, crosses the uterine artery, and approaches the Urinary Bladder near the upper lateral wall of the Vagina. All these anatomical relationships must be carefully considered during surgical interventions in urological and gynecological practice.
