Special Part
Arthrology, artrologia [the study of bone joints] - Classification of joints and their general characteristics
Uniaxial joints

Pivot joint, articulatio trochoidea [cylindrica]. A cylindrical articular surface, the axis of which is positioned vertically—parallel to the long axis of the articulating bones or the vertical axis of the body—allows movement around a single vertical axis, namely rotation (rotatio); such a joint is also referred to as a trochoid or rotary joint.

Hinge joint, ginglymus. An example is the interphalangeal JOINTS OF THE fingers. Its pulley-shaped articular surface resembles a cylinder lying horizontally, with its long axis oriented transversely in the frontal plane, perpendicular to the long axis of the articulating bones. For this reason, movements in a hinge joint occur around the frontal axis, facilitating flexion and extension. The guiding grooves and ridges present on the articulating surfaces prevent lateral displacement and ensure uniaxial movement.
