Exon-intron Organization of Eukaryotic genes

Eukaryotic structural genes have a mosaic Structure consisting of exons and introns. Exons are informative, coding regions (encoding Amino Acids), whereas introns are non-informative, non-coding regions (do not encode amino acids). Sometimes the total length of introns exceeds the total length of exons by 10 times or more. All introns and exons are transcribed as part of the precursor mRNA, but subsequently the introns are

excised and the exons are spliced together to form mature mRNA (Processing, splicing). Prokaryotic genes do not contain introns and are therefore smaller than eukaryotic structural genes
