3.2. ALCOHOLIC HEPATITIS

Alcoholic hepatitis is an acute or chronic Liver disease caused by alcohol intoxication.

Alcohol (ethanol) is a hepatotoxic agent and, at certain concentrations, causes hepatic Cell necrosis.

Acute alcoholic hepatitis has the following morphological features: the liver is enlarged and firm, with pale brown areas alternating with brownish-red ones. Focal necrosis develops in hepatocytes, and alcoholic hyaline (Mallory bodies) appears. Alcoholic hyaline is a fibrillar protein synthesized by hepatocytes under METABOLISM/18.html">The Influence of ethanol, which leads to the death of liver Cells.

With repeated alcohol intake, acute alcoholic hepatitis progresses to a chronic form that differs very little from Other types of chronic hepatitis. The diagnostic hallmark is the presence of alcoholic hyaline within liver cells along with pronounced fatty degeneration. Alcoholic hepatitis frequently terminates in liver cirrhosis.
