CHAPTER 6. THE RESPIRATORY PROCESS AND ITS PATHOLOGY
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM DISEASES
TRACHEITIS
Tracheitis is an inflammation of the tracheal mucosa that can occur in acute and chronic forms.
Acute tracheitis is rarely isolated; it typically develops as an extension of acute rhinitis, pharyngitis, or laryngitis. One of the most frequent causes of acute tracheitis is a viral infection triggered by overall body hypothermia. Morphological Changes in the Trachea are characterized by edema, leukocyte infiltration, and hyperemia of the mucous membrane.
Chronic tracheitis is relatively uncommon. Morphologically, it presents in two forms: hyperplastic and atrophic.
Croupous or diphtheritic inflammation of the trachea may result from exposure to toxic agents, such as phosgene or mustard gas, as well as in diphtheria. Specific lesions of the trachea are observed in tuberculosis.
